Bikaner, with its captivating blend of architectural splendour, traditional craftsmanship, and contemporary vitality, is a city that never ceases to inspire. At its heart lies the magnificent Junagarh Fort, a landmark structure seamlessly integrating red sandstone and marble. Initially known as Chintamani, Junagarh Fort received the name Junagarh, or Old Fort, in the early 20th century, when the ruling family of Bikaner relocated to Lalgarh Palace beyond the fort’s confines. The fort’s construction began in 1478 under the stewardship of Rao Bika.
Every facet of the Fort is adorned with the intention to awe and inspire. Historians often describe Junagarh Fort as a living museum of art, boasting an exquisite blend of Indo-Mughal architecture, and an immense catalogue of floral patterns.
Sandstone walls, intricate floral patterns, and a rich royal history welcome visitors with open arms. The fort’s distinct red sandstone, believed to have been transported from Jaisalmer, adds to its grandeur.
This huge complex features a five story palace complex – a total of 39 individual palaces – covering 13 acres enclosing innumerable rooms, court yards, temples and shrines, gardens, stables for both horses and elephants, armories, barracks and jail, and of course, staircases, which have been constructed, re-constructed, and expanded over centuries.
The palaces nestled within the fort are thoughtfully designed around courtyards, each akin to a vibrant public square, contributing to the fort’s unique charm and historical significance.
The interior decorations are remarkably opulent, featuring exquisite paintings adorning wooden doors and beams that are nothing short of marvellous. The patterns, encompassing elements like trees, flowers, clouds, and figures, as well as the delicate enamelling work on glass, exude a distinct sense of originality. Within these ornate interiors, one can observe the fusion of Mughal artistry with vivid examples of Rajput culture.
